Adopt or Buy a Dog in Singapore?

Rarely. In Singapore, adoption almost always means an older dog, a Singapore Special, a retired breeding dog or a special-needs dog. Young purebred puppies are very seldom available for adoption, so most people who specifically want a puppy buy one from a licensed source.

Not really free. Most shelters charge an adoption fee of roughly $200 to $500 that covers sterilisation, vaccination and microchipping, which costs the shelter far more than the fee. Listings advertising completely free puppies are a common red flag for unlicensed or backyard breeding.

You browse a shelter’s adoptable dogs, submit an application, and go through an interview and often a home visit to check the match. If approved, you pay the adoption fee, complete licensing, and bring your dog home. Reputable shelters do not allow impulse, walk-in adoptions.

A Singapore Special is a local mixed-breed dog, often a former street or shelter dog. They are typically medium-sized, healthy, intelligent and loyal. Many are available for adoption, and under Project ADORE some can be kept in HDB flats subject to conditions.

From application to homecoming it can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the shelter’s interview and home-visit schedule and how well the match fits. Buying a licensed puppy is usually quicker, as the puppy simply comes home after its vaccination schedule.
