The nose is the whole dog
A Beagle is a scent hound, which means it was bred to find a trail and follow it, in company, for as long as it takes. Everything else about the breed sits downstream of that.
The practical consequence is the one nobody tells buyers: recall genuinely degrades when the nose takes over. A Beagle on a scent is not defying you. It is doing the only job the breed was ever built for, and hearing you is not part of that job.
- The lead rule: in unfenced space, always, even for a well-trained adult.
- Use a long line where you want freedom without a fence, and a fenced area where you want none.

Beagle health: what to ask about before you pay
Beagles are robust and long-lived at 12–15 years. Four things are worth asking about, and the first is the one an owner controls entirely.
Weight
Canine obesity is the first health item in a breed this food-motivated. Measured meals, counted treats, and a hands-on body check monthly rather than a scale.
Ears
Ear infections start with long drop ears in a humid climate. Weekly checking and proper drying after any bath or swim is the whole prevention.
Eyes
